TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 2007- 2008 EDUCATION YEAR- SECOND TERM-SECOND ENGLISH EXAM
Name: Surname: Read the text THE LAST LAUGH Emma didn’t have much time. She had a sick feeling in her stomach but she had to go to school- there was no getting out of it. ‘Bye mum,’ she shouted as she put a few books into her bag and left the house.
It was a grey day and it started to rain as she quickly walked towards the bus stop. ‘Hey Emma! Wait for me!’ a voice called from behind. It was Zoe, running to catch up. ‘Thanks for helping me out yesterday,’ she said, pulling her coat around her shoulders. ‘Not many people turn against Anna- they’re too scared. None of my other friends dared.’ ‘That’s OK,’ said Emma, trying not to feel irritated. She couldn’t admit to Zoe how much now she was regretting it. She was already under enough pressure at school without making enemies of people like Anna. Why hadn’t she just kept quiet and walked away? ‘Aren’t you worried about what she’ll do?’ asked Zoe. ‘No,’ said Emma coolly. ‘I can take care of myself.’
The morning was uneventful. There was no sign of Anna or any of her friends. ‘Perhaps she isn’t in today,’ thought Emma feeling relieved…
It was midday and the school bell rang for lunch. Emma went down to the canteen. She noticed Zoe at a nearby table, but she pretended she hadn’t seen her and sat on her own. Emma had some sandwiches, a few biscuits and some orange juice, but she wasn’t feeling hungry. ‘Well, look who it is!’ someone said suddenly. Emma froze, then slowly looked behind her. It was Anna with several of her friends. They were standing there, just staring at her. ‘Get lost,’ said Emma and carried on eating. Anna walked p ast, looked down at her and then deliberately knocked Emma’s sandwiches onto the floor. ‘Oops, you’re not having much luck today, are you?’ she said as she carried on walking, at the same time carefully treading the sandwiches into the floor. Emma was furious, but there was nothing she could do.
Then something extraordinary happened. As Anna turned to walk away she slipped on one of the sandwiches. Emma looked up just in time to see her crash into Zoe’s table and fall into a plate of spaghetti. Everyone was pointing and laughing as Anna got up, red with embarrassment, and covered in sauce. ‘Would you like some parmesan cheese with that?’ said Zoe, smiling innocently…
